For international students in the U.S. with a degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field, the STEM OPT extension offers an opportunity to continue gaining practical work experience after graduation. Whether you’re curious about what the extension entails or how to apply, this blog post covers the entire process in detail.
What is STEM OPT?
STEM OPT is an extension of the Optional Practical Training (OPT) period, specifically designed for F-1 visa students with a STEM degree. While the regular OPT allows international students to work for 12 months after completing their degree, the STEM OPT extension provides an additional 24 months. This means that eligible students can work in the U.S. for up to 36 months in total after graduation.
What Majors/Degrees Qualify for the STEM OPT Extension?
Not every degree qualifies for the STEM OPT extension. To be eligible, your degree must be in a field classified as STEM by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Some of the more common degrees that qualify include:
- Computer Science
- Engineering
- Biological Sciences
- Mathematics
- Physical Science
You can check the DHS's STEM Designated Degree Program List to verify if your major is eligible.
To qualify for the STEM OPT extension, you must meet the following requirements:
- You must have F-1 visa status
- You cannot be self-employed
- You are currently working under a valid period of post-completion OPT
- You have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher in an eligible STEM field (check the official STEM Designated Degree Program List)
- The employer is enrolled in the USCIS E-Verify program
- The position offers at least 20 hours of work per week
- The job is paid and provides formal training and learning objectives directly related to your STEM degree
- You and your employer must be able to complete and submit the form I-983 (Training Plan for STEM OPT Students)
Steps to Apply for the STEM OPT Extension
Before applying for the STEM OPT extension with USCIS, you must first obtain an updated STEM OPT I-20 from your Designated School Official (DSO).
Step 1: Request Your STEM OPT I-20
- Ensure that you have been maintaining F-1 status and that your 12-month OPT details are current. You can check this through the SEVP Portal. If any details are incorrect, you should either update them yourself or submit a portal assistance request through your school's international student services system
- Complete Form I-983 with your employer, detailing your training plan. Ensure all information is accurate and up to date
- Submit your request for the STEM OPT Extension I-20 to your school's international student office within 90 days before your 12-month OPT expires
Step 2: Receive Your Updated STEM OPT I-20
- Your DSO will issue a new I-20 that includes the STEM OPT recommendation. This must be signed by your DSO
- Ensure that you receive this updated I-20 before submitting your application to USCIS, as it will be required when filing for your STEM OPT extension
Step 3: Submit Form I-765 to USCIS
- After receiving your STEM OPT I-20, you can submit your Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization) to USCIS. This is the final step to apply for your STEM OPT extension
- When USCIS receives your application, you will automatically be granted a 6-month extension of your work authorization, which allows you to continue working while your application is being processed. You’ll receive a receipt notice that serves as proof of this extension
After Submitting the Application to USCIS
Once your application is submitted, you can continue working under the 180-day extension granted by USCIS. Additionally, you are allowed to travel during the pending or approved STEM OPT extension period, but make sure you carry the USCIS receipt notice as proof of extended work authorization.
Premium Processing Fee/Time
If you’re in a hurry, you might be wondering about premium processing for the STEM OPT application. USCIS offers premium processing with a fee of $1,685.
Reporting Requirements After Approval
After receiving approval for your STEM OPT extension, there are several reporting requirements you’ll need to fulfill to maintain your status.
- Validation Reports Every Six Months: Report your employment details and address to your DSO every six months, even if there are no changes
- Annual Self-Evaluations: Complete and submit evaluations of your training progress from the Form I-983 at the 12-month and 24-month marks
- Report Any Changes in Employment: Notify your DSO within 10 days of changing employers or significant job duties. Ensure your new employer is E-Verify enrolled and submit a new Form I-983
