All international students at SLU are required to have continuous health insurance at full-time enrollment. If you don't waive by the deadline, you'll be automatically enrolled in SLU’s Student Health Insurance Plan (UHP) administered by Aetna.

What Is the SLU Insurance Waiver?

SLU students are charged a default fee for UHP each semester. But you can opt out if you submit proof of alternate health insurance that meets SLU’s waiver criteria before the deadline. A successful waiver removes this fee from your tuition account.

SLU Waiver Requirements for International Students

To qualify for waiver, your plan must include:

  • Annual coverage from August 15, 2025 through August 14, 2026
  • Deductible of $500 or less
  • Unlimited benefit caps
  • Inpatient & outpatient medical and mental health services in St. Louis
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Medical evacuation ≥ $50,000 and repatriation ≥ $25,000
  • U.S. mailing address and phone number for claims and support

International student plans like ISO’s are pre approved and meet all SLU waiver criteria.

Waiver Deadline for Fall 2025

  • Deadline: September 25, 2025
  • Open waiver period: July 1 – September 25, 2025

Missing this deadline means you’ll be automatically enrolled in the UHP and billed for fall coverage.

SLU UHP Costs vs Private Insurance

Coverage Period SLU UHP (Aetna) Cost ISO Insurance (Pre-Approved)
Fall-only (8/15 - 12/31) $1,770 From ~$31-$75/month
Annual (8/15 – 8/14) $4,680 Lower than UHP, varies by plan
