7 Scholarship Opportunities For International Students to Explore

Studying in the U.S. comes with a lot of perks but the price for tuition can get a bit too expensive to handle, especially for international students. Luckily, there are many scholarship opportunities to apply for, as companies or other institutions acknowledge the immense impact international students have and want to help to give back.

We’ve compiled a list below of 7 scholarship opportunities international students can look for in 2023 and beyond.

#1 –Fulbright Foreign Student Programs

Eligible for: Graduate students coming to the U.S. from a large selection of foreign countries (including India, Brazil, South Korea, etc.)

Application period: Varies depending on program but generally opens around April and closes in September.

Overview: The following program provides an opportunity for international graduate students to receive financial assistance to study and conduct research in the U.S. These programs are generally sponsored by U.S. embassies and qualifications/applications vary for each country.

#2 –ACI Foundation Scholarship 2023

Eligible for: All international graduate and undergraduate students

Application period: Period opens July 1st, 2023 and deadline depends on program but website encourages applications as soon as possible after period opens. Next period of coverage would be for Spring 2024 and Fall 2025 so you must be a student through then.

Overview: The ACI Foundation provides a variety of scholarship and fellowship opportunities and encourages international student applications. You’ll see on the website there is one application for all programs and you will be able to choose which you want to apply for based on your eligibility.

Scholarships they offer generally have a $5000 educational stipend but fellowship programs offer a $10,000-$15,000 stipend, as well as access to conventions with others in the program and assistance to find a mentor.


#3 – AAUW International Fellowship Program 2023

Eligible for: Women in graduate or post-doctoral programs who plan to return home after graduation.

Application period: August 1st, 2023 – November 15th, 2023 (for the 2024-2025 school year)

Overview: This is a fellowship designed for women who have acquired a U.S. Bachelor’s degree and plan to enroll in a graduate program. It offers $20,000 – $50,000 award amounts depending on your program for educational and living expenses.

#4 – World Bank Scholarships program

Eligible for: Offered to graduate students from a list of developing countries (including India) that will participate in a program at one of the following schools.

Application period: There are two enrollment periods depending on your school but generally lasts from mid-January to mid-May.

Overview: This is a scholarship sponsored by Japan and the World Bank which is meant to help international students contribute to their countries’ social and economic development. This program provides tuition, a monthly living stipend, round-trip airfare, and travel allowance.

The list is fairly limited in terms of who can apply and you must be in a development-related program like economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management so review at the link above.

#5 – Science Ambassador scholarship

Eligible for: Women in STEM fields that attend college (or plan to attend college) in the United States or a United States Territory.

Application deadline: Mailing list currently open for the 2024 academic year.

Overview: This is a full-tuition scholarship to help women in STEM fields funded by Cards Against Humanity. There is a large board of judges that determine a winner each year. Tuition will be paid up to four years or for the remainder of the winner’s undergraduate program.

To apply, you need to submit a 3-minute YouTube video explaining something you’re passionate about in the STEM field. Full rules are listed at the website link above.


#6 – Deserve Scholarship for international students

Eligible for: Any international student on a valid F1, M1 or J1 visa enrolled in a U.S. non-profit university or college.

Application deadline: Summer prior to the school year.

Overview: This is a scholarship reward to 25 international students every school year by credit card company Deserve. Winners will have $1,000 sent directly to their school to help pay for their tuition costs. Winners are randomly selected.


#7 – SMART Scholarship Program by Department of Defense

Eligible for: Undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students currently pursuing a degree in one of the 21 STEM disciplines from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the UK

Application period: August through December, every year.

Overview: This is a scholarship/fellowship offered by the Department of Defense. Those who are chosen will receive full coverage of tuition and educational related expenses, summer internship opportunities and guaranteed job offer after graduation.

You must be one year removed from graduation, able to produce a Fall 2021 transcript and able to work for the DoD after graduation.

If you find yourself not able to pursue any of the offerings above, there is no reason to worry. The most popular scholarships in the U.S. for international students will come directly from your school.
